Karuizawa has been Tokyo's summer retreat since the Meiji period and is now seventy minutes from the capital by bullet train, which makes it the easiest mountain escape in Japan. Further west, Matsumoto has the black castle and the gateway to the Kamikochi valley, and Hakuba has the snow that brought the 1998 Olympics. The hotels are a mix of forest ryokan with their own hot springs and a handful of very good modern properties. Summer is cool and green, autumn has the maples, and the ski season runs December to March.
