Manchester

Manchester is a compact city built on cotton and rebuilt on music, football and a good deal of Victorian architecture now converted. The Northern Quarter, Spinningfields and Ancoats hold most of the eating and drinking. Both football clubs run stadium tours and match tickets need arranging well ahead. The Lake District and the Peak District are each about an hour away, which makes the city a practical start to a northern trip. The airport has good long haul connections.
