Two nine-tent camps on the Kichwa Tembo concession, beneath the Oloololo escarpment, look out over the Masai Mara's Great Migration routes.
Bateleur Camp occupies a stretch of the Kichwa Tembo concession, a private tract of land leased from Maasai landlords on the western edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve. The camp sits beneath the forested Oloololo escarpment, where the Great Rift Valley begins. Kichwa Tembo, meaning head of the elephant in Kiswahili, is explored almost exclusively by &Beyond guests, which gives access to migration routes away from the busier parts of the reserve.
The camp is split into two sections, each with nine tents, furnished with antiques and artefacts made by local Maasai artisans, including wedding skirt ottomans and beaded rungu door handles. Baths are lit by candle and scattered with rose petals. Open-air lounges and fireside corners run through the camp, and the South Camp bar serves as a coffee bar by day and a gin bar by night, stocking over 16 craft gins. Meals move between the deck, the pool and the plains, from bush breakfasts to fireside dinners under the stars. A massage sala offering Healing Earth treatments and a gym both look out over the Mara.
Game drives leave at dawn in search of the Mara's resident predators, and guided bush walks come with complimentary Swarovski Optik binoculars. Hot air balloon flights, night drives, Maasai cultural visits and Maasai blessings or celebrations are available at an additional cost. Guests reach camp by air: flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport take just under an hour to the Kichwa Tembo private airstrip, followed by a short game drive to camp.
