Отель · Yufuin, Japan
A 45-room onsen ryokan in Yufuin, Oita, set between Mt. Yufu and a landscape of terraced rice fields that changes with the harvest cycle.
KAI Yufuin stands between Mt. Yufu and a stretch of terraced rice fields in Yufuin Onsen, Oita. The ryokan takes the form of a long, farmhouse-style structure with a wraparound veranda where guests can look out over the fields. The property has 45 rooms, with occupancy ranging from one to four guests, and two onsen baths fed by the Yufuin Hot Springs, where bathers can see Mt. Yufu and open sky while soaking outdoors.
Dining centres on a kaiseki dinner built around game meat and vegetables drawn from this geothermal region, served in semi-private rooms suited to couples, extended families or small groups. The seasonal menu includes a shabu-shabu course served with kabosu pepper and kabosu ponzu. Breakfast runs from 7:15 AM to 9:30 AM, with a Western-style option available except from 1 to 3 January. Children aged 4 to 6 and 7 to 11 are offered separate Japanese platters, and a vegetarian kaiseki and breakfast, free of the eight major allergens, can be arranged in advance. The dining hall itself is fitted with pendant lights made from locally sourced bamboo and washi-paper floor lamps that reveal the silhouettes of straw and rice stalks embedded in the paper.
KAI Signature Rooms are built around local craft and custom, among them the Firefly Room, where a light fixture woven from shichitoi straw is hung above the beds, its numerous small lights recalling fireflies over water in early summer. The property is around 15 minutes from the Yufuin Interchange on the Oita Expressway, offers private free parking and EV charging available 24 hours, and allows pets. Nearby points of interest include the Jakoshi Observatory, Lake Kinrin, Yunotsubo-Kaido Street and Mt. Yufu itself, along with horse-drawn carriage rides through the surrounding scenery.
