Mara Expedition Camp sits among East African acacia trees overlooking a valley in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, on private land close to the Mara North Conservancy. The camp draws on the look of early twentieth-century exploration: campaign furniture, open-air gathering spaces and canvas tents in a light tan colour. The main area is lit by lanterns and candles rather than electric light, and the camp is set low in the landscape, out of sight of neighbouring properties.
There are five double guest tents and one two-bedroom family tent, each with a small veranda, a writing desk, a double or twin-configuration bed, double vanity basins, an indoor hot and cold water shower, a wardrobe and a flush toilet. Wildlife is sometimes visible from the tents themselves, and private dining can be arranged in the room on request.
The camp lies within reach of two movements of wildlife: the Serengeti migration from the south and the green season migration, which brings a further 50,000 wildebeest and around 100,000 zebra into the area. Days are spent on open-vehicle game drives with a picnic breakfast, and often lunch, across the Maasai Mara National Reserve, with occasional drives into the Mara North Conservancy. A hot air balloon flight over the Mara is available at extra cost. Guests can also visit the Naboisho Women's Group, supported by the Great Plains Foundation, to see a leather tailor and buy raw materials in bulk. Evenings are spent around the camp's swimming pool or an outdoor seating area lit by fire, with an interactive kitchen where guests can watch the chefs prepare meals before they are served.
