Mara Nyika Camp sits in a valley within the Naboisho Conservancy, part of the greater Maasai Mara ecosystem in Kenya. Four raised, light-coloured canvas suites and a two-bedroom family tent stand under umbrella-thorn trees alongside a small river, linked by raised wooden walkways to the main camp area. The site was chosen over three years of scouting by Dereck Joubert, who looked for a spot free of light or noise pollution where leopard and lioness with cubs were seen on repeated visits.
Each of the four guest suites measures 1,000 square feet and includes an indoor private lounge and a separate en-suite bathroom with a brass bath, double vanity basins and an indoor shower. The 2-bedroom Family Suite has a common lounge flanked by two bedrooms and two en-suite bathrooms, one with an indoor shower and brass bath and the other with a shower only. Every suite has its own private veranda. The private Sambuk Suite, set apart at the end of the raised walkway and designed by Dereck Joubert around the shade of Acacia kirkii trees, offers two bedrooms off a central lounge and dining area, along with a private butler, safari vehicle and wildlife guide.
The main camp area looks out over the wilderness and includes a library and an on-site wine cellar available for tours and special meals. The Great Plains Safari Boutique stocks Beverly Joubert's d&b explorer clothing collection and other items. Guests explore the private Naboisho Conservancy, the second-largest in the greater Maasai Mara region, in open-sided Land Cruisers that seat a maximum of four guests and carry complimentary professional cameras. Hot air ballooning is available at an additional cost. Naboisho means 'coming together' in the Maasai Maa language, reflecting the 500 local landowners who established the conservancy; each stay supports more than 500 Maasai families, including the Naboisho Women's Group, whose bead, honey and soap-making work reaches 105 households and benefits a further 1,000 people. Mara Nyika Camp and the Sambuk Suite are Relais & Châteaux members, part of the Great Plains Conservation Réserve-Collection.
