ol Donyo Lodge stands on the Mbirikani Ranch in the Chyulu Hills, land owned by 4,000 Maasai, between Kenya's Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks. It is part of Great Plains Conservation's Réserve-Collection and, together with the other Kenyan camps in that collection, holds Relais & Châteaux membership, the only such camps in the country. From the hillside position, guests look out over open savannah toward Mount Kilimanjaro, a view shared by the lodge's main areas and by each suite.
The lodge holds 8 deluxe suites and one 2-bedroomed family Sambu Suite. Every suite has its own private veranda and swimming pool, an indoor lounge, and an en-suite bathroom with an indoor bath and both indoor and outdoor showers. A rooftop star bed lets guests sleep in the open, listening for hyenas and lions through the night and waking to birdsong. Spa treatments are available either at the spa or brought to the suite. In front of the main area, two hides face the waterhole: an open-air hide and a newer sunken hide fitted with a coffee machine and fridge, both built so guests can stay through the day to watch what comes to drink. A fire deck off the main area has recently been added for evenings under the stars.
Wildlife viewing extends across open-vehicle safari drives, night safaris for nocturnal sightings, and walking safaris led by guides who cover the local flora and fauna. For intermediate and advanced riders, horseback safaris cross the Chyulu Hills ecosystem, and helicopter flights can be pre-booked for aerial views of the hills and Kilimanjaro. Cultural visits include the Kimana market, a 1.5 to 2 hour drive away, and a Maasai homestead near Imbirikani, where a cash donation is paid at the lodge and passed to the community. School visits arranged through the Great Plains Foundation are possible with 24 hours' notice, during school hours, at two local schools. A Young Explorers programme runs for younger guests, and high-quality binoculars are provided throughout the stay.
