Usawa Serengeti is a mobile tented camp operating within Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Its name, taken from the Kiswahili word for balance, reflects the camp's approach: rather than occupying one permanent site, it is set up and taken down entirely, leaving no fixed structures behind, and moved between key locations as the wildebeest migration shifts across the plains. The camp accommodates 12 guests across six en-suite safari tents and can be booked for sole use. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom, a personal coffee bar and safari-style furnishings, with an open-plan main area that looks out over the plains. The camp runs on solar power and includes Wi-Fi and hot water throughout.
Over the course of a season, Usawa operates from four named locations, each chosen for a different phase of the migration. The Northern Hills, set among the Namylumba Hills, draw wildlife to two nearby watercourses and are frequented by a resident lion pride, with occasional leopard and rhino sightings; this area is best from July to October and sits roughly two hours by game drive from the Mara River. The Southern Plains, formed by volcanic ash, come alive during calving season from December to February, with access to the Ndutu Woodlands and Hidden Valley. Usawa Grumeti, active from April to July, follows the Grumeti River through forest, plain and the Simiti Hills, with large lion prides and elephants present year-round. Usawa Lamai, north of the Mara River and quieter than nearby Kogatende, is best from July to October for the rutting season and is close to the river crossings. Locations can be combined within a single circuit, connected by short charter flights between airstrips such as Kogatende, Lamai, Kusini and Seronera.
Activities include game drives, guided walks within designated walking zones, birding across a park recorded to hold more than 500 species, and stargazing. A hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti can be arranged at additional cost, weather and season dependent, followed by a bush breakfast on landing. The camp's menu is built around locally sourced ingredients, and Wilderness Tanzania works with local communities and training programmes aimed at reducing tree cutting, snaring and poaching around the park.
