Lisbon runs up and down hills above the Tagus, and the trams exist because the gradients demand them. Alfama, Chiado and Principe Real are where most visitors stay and eat. Belem holds the monastery and the tower; Sintra, half an hour by train, has the palaces in the hills and deserves a full day. The coast at Cascais and Estoril is close enough to fold in. Spring and autumn are the best of it; August is hot and busy.
