Milan is a working city that rewards knowing where to go: the Duomo and the Galleria, the Brera district for galleries and dinner, and the Quadrilatero for the shopping it is known for. Leonardo's Last Supper needs booking well in advance. The city empties in August and fills completely for Salone del Mobile in April and for the fashion weeks, when hotel rooms are scarce and expensive. Lake Como and Lake Maggiore are both about an hour north, which makes Milan a natural start or finish.
