Grand Hotel Miramare stands on the seafront at Santa Margherita Ligure, a five-star hotel that has operated since 1903 and been run by the Fustinoni family since 1945. The building keeps its Art Nouveau architecture, with restored stuccoed ceilings, geometric wood floors and original bronzed-brass bedheads, alongside more recent additions in Italian design. There are 71 bedrooms and suites in total, each decorated differently and looking out over either the gardens or Tigullio Bay.
The hotel's beach, Bagni Miramare, sits directly in front of the property and is managed by Elena Fustinoni. Hotel guests use it without charge, with a lounger, umbrella and towel allocated each day on a first come, first served basis. Behind the hotel, a century-old garden climbs the lower slopes of Mount Portofino, planted with palms, olives, maritime pines, cedars of Lebanon, camellias and hydrangeas, and crossed by a path known as the Sentimental Walk. The seawater pool, styled in a 1970s manner with loungers and a shaded pergola, is open daily from 09:00 to 19:00, mid-April to mid-October. e'SPA'ce, the wellness centre, and a fitness centre equipped with Xenios, Concept2 and Air Runner machines are both open through the day, the latter also offering personal training and post-travel recovery sessions.
Food runs across four venues: Vistamare, an Art Nouveau dining room overseen by chef Claudio Fortuna, serving Ligurian and Italian dishes with international touches; the Pool Restaurant & Bar; Bar Le Colonne for aperitifs with a view across Tigullio Bay; and the Barracuda Beach Restaurant, serving fresh fish and pasta by the sea. Contemporary art, part of an ongoing collection called miramART, is displayed through the hotel's corridors and public rooms. One of the newer suites, Signature Suite Miramare, is given over to the work of architect and designer Gio Ponti.
