The hotel is built as a small Andean village: terraced hills, stone pathways, waterfalls and 80 whitewashed adobe casitas set within cloud forest. The reserve has recorded 317 bird species, among them the golden-headed quetzal and the Andean cock-of-the-rock, alongside what is described as the world's largest native orchid collection, with 372 species catalogued on site.
The Dining Room & Bar occupies a glass house overlooking the Vilcanota River and the cloud forest hills, serving Peruvian cuisine with a contemporary approach. It seats 120 guests, with breakfast from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., a complimentary Tea Time from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. featuring the property's own organic black tea, cocktail hour from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and dinner from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Tables seat a maximum of four; larger groups are directed to Café Inkaterra. The Unu Spa, named after the Quechua word for water, stands near an Andean sauna and a natural spring-water pond. Treatments use botanical extracts of mint, eucalyptus and orchid, and the menu includes deep tissue and reflexology work alongside an exfoliation using coca leaves.
For those visiting the citadel, buses leave Aguas Calientes before dawn at 15-minute intervals throughout the day, with the last return bus at 5:30 p.m. The hotel is 110 kilometres from Cusco. The recommended route is by car to Ollantaytambo, followed by a train journey of about one and a half hours, or a direct train from Cusco taking roughly 3.5 hours. A one-day walk along the Inca Trail, returning by bus, is also possible from here.
