The Oberoi Cecil stands at the quieter end of Shimla's Mall Road, on the site of the hotel that was, during the British Raj, the town's most fashionable address, known for its grand ballroom dances. The Government of India's Ministry of Tourism lists it as a Heritage Grand Hotel. Shimla was adopted as the summer capital of British India in 1863, and colonial landmarks including Christ Church and the Viceregal Lodge sit within reach of the hotel.
Rooms and suites keep teak wood floors and heritage detailing, from brass-ornamented two-poster beds to leather-topped writing desks. Categories run from the Deluxe Room through to the Luxury Suite, which spans a separate living room and a master bedroom with views of the Himalayas and the Shimla valley. The Restaurant occupies the hotel's former ballroom and serves international and Indian cuisine beneath its original chandeliers, while Cedar Garden offers grills and Himachali dance in an al fresco setting. The Lounge & Bar serves high tea and drinks under a skylight in the Atrium, with live classical piano each evening.
The Oberoi Spa is built into the mountainside and reached by a flight of wooden stairs, with therapy suites that look over the Shimla valley. There is an indoor, temperature-controlled swimming pool, a 24-hour fitness centre and a Children's Activity Centre with table tennis, foosball and a library. The hotel sources all of its electricity from hydro-electric power. Shimla Railway Station is 650 metres away; Shimla Airport is 18 kilometres, a 43-minute drive; Chandigarh Airport is 122 kilometres, around four hours by road.
