The Sambuk Suite at Mara Nyika stands apart from the main camp, built up under the canopy of flat-topped Acacia kirkii trees typical of this part of the Maasai Mara. Mara Nyika Camp itself sits in a valley along a small stream, but the two-bedroomed suite, designed by Dereck Joubert, is reached by a raised walkway that ends high above the bush, giving views over the surrounding Naboisho Conservancy and a degree of privacy the rest of the camp does not offer.
The suite is built around a private central lounge and dining area, with two bedrooms leading off it. Guests have their own butler, safari vehicle and wildlife guide for the length of their stay, so mealtimes and game drives follow no set camp schedule. In-room spa treatments can be arranged, and the bush boutique in the main camp area is an easy walk away. Both the suite and Mara Nyika Camp are Relais & Châteaux members, one of only a handful of such properties in Kenya.
Game drives take place in the Naboisho Private Conservancy in an open-sided vehicle fitted out for photography, with fold-down screens, a raised roof, photographic bars and multi-plug inverters. A set of binoculars and a professional camera are kept in the suite for guests to use. Beyond the drives, visitors can call on the Naboisho Women's Group, a beadwork and craft cooperative supported by the Great Plains Foundation, or arrange a hot air balloon flight over the conservancy at an additional cost.
