Okinawa is Japan at twenty six degrees: coral reefs, white sand and a culture that was a separate kingdom until the 1870s and still feels it. The main island has the beach resorts and the wartime history; the Yaeyama islands further south, Ishigaki, Taketomi and Iriomote, have the better water and the mangrove forest. Flights run from Tokyo and Osaka in two to three hours. The season runs March to June and September to November; typhoons are a real risk from July to September and the summer is humid.
