Arenas del Mar sits on an 11-acre private nature reserve in Manuel Antonio, Puntarenas, where rainforest meets the Pacific. The resort holds just 38 guest rooms and suites, with private balconies that look out over the ocean and the forest canopy. Two beaches, Playitas and Espadilla, front the property, and the coastline here runs for two kilometres. Surfable waves reach the shore, and whales can be seen spouting offshore at a distance.
The reserve forms part of a wildlife corridor connecting to Manuel Antonio National Park. More than 20 species have been recorded here, including pumas and ocelots, alongside the sloths, monkeys and iguanas guests regularly spot from their balconies or the beach. In-house naturalists point out wildlife on site and lead hikes into the neighbouring national park. The hotel also runs a Secret Life of Wildlife initiative, using four cameras to track animal movement through the corridor, with guided night walks and a real-time image-sharing activity for guests. A separate programme offers guided, behind-the-scenes tours of the hotel's kitchens, gardens and storage areas, led by a sustainability manager or naturalist guide. Thirty years ago this land was tacotal, scrubland left by subsistence farming; the current team has worked since to restore it through regenerative landscaping.
Food and drink lean local. An in-house brewery and drinks lab produces the hotel's own beer and a non-alcoholic counterpart, with water bottled on site in reusable glass bottles. The Dock to Dish programme connects hotel chefs directly with local fishermen's daily catch, and guests can also sample oysters from a local women-owned farming cooperative. Rainwater is harvested on site and meals are planned seasonally. Dining takes place at Playitas Beachfront Restaurant & Bar and Mirador Oceanview Restaurant & Bar, with Las Brisas Wellness Center, an infinity pool and a separate kids' beachside pool rounding out the facilities. Every member of staff, from management to the front desk and guides, is hired from within Costa Rica.
