KAI Akiu

KAI Akiu sits beside the Natori River in Akiu Onsen, a hot spring area with a 1,400-year history, about 30 minutes by car from Sendai Station. The ryokan draws on two hot springs on its grounds to fill baths that range from hot to body temperature, and a lounge overlooking the mountain stream offers a footbath alongside seasonal wagashi and fresh tea. Almost all of the 49 rooms are Signature Rooms, each with a sitting area beside a wide window facing the river valley, furnished in deep blue tones that echo the water below.

Dinner is built around kaiseki cooking that uses Sanriku seafood and reflects the region's seasonal produce. The standard seasonal menu opens with an appetizer of oxtail and Sendai miso rillettes and continues to a Fukahire Rikyu Nabe, a shark fin hot pot finished with sesame tofu, served across footed lacquered trays in semi-private dining rooms. A separate Sankai Takara-zukushi course, available until the end of February 2027, centres on a Treasure Pot of Sendai beef, shark fin, abalone, sea urchin and oysters in a broth modelled on the dish known as Buddha Jumps Over the Wall. Breakfast, served between 7 and 9am, includes regional dishes such as taro and meat soup and deep-fried tofu triangles, with a Western alternative available outside the New Year period. Vegetarian kaiseki and children's platters can also be arranged.

The property has one restaurant, two cafés or lounges, two spa or massage facilities and three onsen, along with a pool, playroom and meeting room. Guests may bring pets, and children up to six years old may share a bed within room capacity. Parking and EV charging are available on site, and Wi-Fi is provided free throughout. Bookings are accepted only from within Japan.
