Kwitonda Lodge sits alongside Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, close to the park's headquarters. Its walls are built from volcanic stone, already softened by moss, and the forest spills down from the volcanoes toward the property. Buffaloes graze the open grassland nearby, and forest elephants come down from the mountains from time to time.
At the heart of the lodge, a conservation lounge tells the story of the land's heritage, from Dian Fossey's gorilla conservation work to the geology that gave rise to the volcanoes the property is named for. An outdoor fire pit sits apart from the main buildings, a place to watch the light change through the day. The on-site Akarabo Nursery offers a quiet spot for meals or conversation with local craftspeople, and an open kitchen gives insight into local culinary practices. Guests can walk or cycle across the property and into town.
Treks set out nearby into the high-altitude forests of Volcanoes National Park, home to more than a third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, or into bamboo forest in search of the endemic golden monkey. Each room at Kwitonda has a heated plunge pool, a corner nook, and space for wellness treatments, with views of the volcanoes throughout. In February 2020, Kwitonda Lodge featured on Travel + Leisure's It List.
