Sossusvlei Desert Lodge stands within the &Beyond Sossusvlei Private Desert Reserve, 12,715 hectares (31,419 acres) of protected desert bordering the NamibRand Nature Reserve and the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The reserve forms part of the Namib Sand Sea, the world's oldest desert and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where dunes rise over 230 metres (750 feet). The lodge is one of the few &Beyond properties to encourage self-guided exploration, and it sits within Africa's first International Dark Sky Reserve, the first in the world to receive Gold Tier status.
The lodge is built from stone, glass and light, with fold-away glass doors, a walk-in wine cellar and a wellness space positioned to catch both sunrise and sunset. Accommodation comprises ten Suites and one Star Dune Suite. Each Suite measures 130 square metres (1,400 square feet), sleeps a maximum of two guests, and has a private veranda, a lounge with a fireplace, a glass-encased rain shower, a skylight above the bed and a private plunge pool. The Star Dune Suite, at 267 square metres (2,875 square feet) and sleeping up to four guests, joins two ensuite suites around a shared lounge, private dining area and shaded veranda, suited to families or friends travelling together.
Activities are guided by the lodge's team or undertaken independently, and include e-biking and hiking along two mapped routes, a Big Dune walk on a private Star Dune within the reserve, a dune walk in the Namib-Naukluft National Park to Deadvlei and Big Daddy, a Living Dune experience by all-terrain vehicle, a Desert Rock experience, a Desert People experience centred on San rock art, and a scenic desert drive across four desert habitats. Scenic helicopter flights, hot air ballooning and Healing Earth wellness treatments are available at an additional cost. An on-site observatory houses a Celestron CPC 1100 GPS telescope for guided stargazing.
