Kyushu is the southern island and the hot spring heart of Japan. Beppu and Yufuin sit on enough geothermal activity to make bathing the reason to come; Mount Aso is one of the largest active calderas in the world and you can drive into it; Kumamoto has the castle and Nagasaki the history. The ryokan here are the point, several of them centuries old, with meals served in the room and private baths fed from the spring. It is warmer than the main island and works most of the year, with autumn the best of it.
