Old Cataract, Aswan stands on a pink granite cliff above the Nile, facing Elephantine Island in the Nubian Desert. The hotel was built in 1899 by Thomas Cook to receive travellers arriving by Nile cruise and the Cairo–Aswan railway. Its history includes guests such as Winston Churchill, Tsar Nicholas II and Agatha Christie, who drew on her stay while writing Death on the Nile.
The Palace wing holds 35 rooms and suites, nine rooms and twenty-six suites, each furnished with a blend of French elegance and Egyptian detailing. Rooms such as the Palace Garden View Room (45 square metres) and Palace Deluxe Garden View (53 square metres) open onto private balconies overlooking tropical gardens, while the Palace Nile View Junior Suite (62 square metres) looks toward the river. Signature suites, among them the Sir Winston Churchill Suite and the Agatha Christie Suite, occupy the hotel's upper floors with separate lounges, dining rooms and Nile-facing terraces.
Dining runs along Levantine and Mediterranean lines at Saraya, while The Terrace serves lighter regional dishes with views of Elephantine Island and a signature afternoon tea. An outdoor infinity pool sits above the Nile. The hotel is currently under renovation, with availability of facilities subject to change. Fans of M.O. benefits are expected to resume once the work is complete in 2027.
