The Savoy stands on Savoy Court, a private road just off the Strand in London, beside the River Thames. Built to welcome audiences to the neighbouring Savoy Theatre, it opened in 1889 as one of London's first hotels built specifically for that purpose. Claude Monet stayed here in 1899 and painted the same river view guests see today, and the hotel sits a short stroll from Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden.
The hotel holds 263 rooms and suites across two design eras that sit side by side. 162 rooms are Edwardian, finished in grey and tangerine with Nespresso machines and, in some cases, views across the Thames. The Art Deco rooms on the Strand side use golds and caramels, with marble bathrooms as standard. Suites range up to the Royal Suite, a 264 square metre procession of rooms facing the river, and the Terrace Suite, the only room at the hotel with its own outdoor terrace.
Dining runs across several rooms: Gallery for all-day British cooking and Afternoon Tea beneath its glass dome, Savoy Grill and Restaurant 1890 both by Gordon Ramsay, the River Restaurant by Gordon Ramsay for seasonal, produce-led plates, and Scoff, a shop dedicated to the hotel's scones. The American Bar has served cocktails since 1893, with guests including Churchill and Hemingway; the Beaufort Bar holds a wine collection of over 250 bottles from 18 countries, more than 120 of them served by the glass. Guests booked into River View suites are assigned a butler, and every bathroom carries a Penhaligon's toiletry range created exclusively for the hotel. The wellness floor includes a heated, naturally lit atrium pool with a jet-stream for resistance swimming, a sauna, a steam room and a 24-hour gym with Peloton bikes, with treatments using Natura Bissé, La-Eva and HydraFacial technology.
