Tuscany
Estates in the Val d'Orcia, a week's rhythm of markets and long lunches, and Florence an hour away.
Our notes
Tuscany rewards a slow week more than a fast three days. A restored estate or a small hotel between Pienza and Montalcino puts wine, hill towns and the Val d'Orcia's cypress lanes within twenty minutes, with Florence and Siena as day trips rather than bases. We know the estates with a cook who shops the Tuesday market, which pools face west for the evening, and which agriturismi are actually good. Harvest in late September is the best fortnight of the year and the hardest to get.
