Overview

The ryokan has been receiving guests since 1897, on a lane below the Higashiyama hills that most visitors walk past. Twelve tatami rooms open onto a moss garden or a private courtyard and each has a hinoki cypress bath filled from a natural hot spring. Dinner is a twelve course kaiseki served in the room by the okami, and breakfast is Japanese or Western as you prefer. The staff speak good English and will arrange a tea ceremony, a private visit to a temple garden before it opens and a driver for Arashiyama. Kiyomizu-dera is a ten minute walk, Gion fifteen. It is quiet by design and children under twelve are not accommodated.
