Rwanda has made gorilla trekking its premium product: permits are limited and expensive, groups are eight people, and the lodges on the edge of Volcanoes National Park are now among the best in Africa. The trek itself is a few hours of steep, muddy walking at altitude, and the hour with the family at the end is the reason people describe it as they do. Nyungwe has chimpanzees and Akagera has the big five. Permits must be secured months ahead, which is the part we handle.
