Our notes
The Dolomites are the most dramatic mountains in Europe and run on a culture that is half Italian and half Austrian, which means Alpine hotels with proper Italian cooking. Cortina d'Ampezzo is the grand old resort; Alta Badia and Alpe di Siusi have the better skiing and the Sella Ronda circuit, which laps four valleys in a day. Summer is as good as winter here, with via ferrata and some of the best mountain walking on the continent. The seasons run December to March and June to September, with the valleys quiet between.
