Kanazawa & the Japan Sea Coast

A preserved samurai city, one of Japan's three great gardens and crab in winter.

Our notes

Kanazawa escaped bombing in the war, so its samurai and geisha districts are intact rather than reconstructed, and Kenrokuen is generally counted among the three finest gardens in the country. The city has a serious craft tradition in gold leaf and lacquer, and a food culture built on what the Japan Sea gives up, which in winter means snow crab. Kaga Onsen is thirty minutes south for the hot springs. The bullet train from Tokyo takes two and a half hours.
