Overview

KAI Kaga stands in Yamashiro Onsen, in the city of Kaga, Ishikawa, about ten minutes by car from Kagaonsen Station. The ryokan has 48 rooms, all built to the KAI Signature standard: each is decorated with regional papercraft and dyed fabrics, and furnished with Kutani-yaki tea sets. Room occupancy runs from one to four guests.

The onsen halls take their decoration from Kaga's craft traditions, with gold and silver leaf and ceramic panels depicting seasonal motifs across the three baths. One area is built as a replica of a 19th-century public bathhouse. Each evening, staff perform a contemporary reworking of a traditional dance in which a samurai combats a shishi, a mythical lion represented by a large, colourful wooden head.

Dinner is kaiseki, built around seasonal delicacies such as rosy seabass and crab caught only at certain times of year, and served on ceramicware made in the regional Kutani-yaki style. Plates for each dish are created by young artisans working in Kutani ware and Yamanaka lacquerware, a pairing the ryokan calls a marriage of plates and cuisine. The dining area is arranged in semi-private rooms suited to couples, extended families and small groups. Breakfast, served from 7:15 to 9:00 AM, centres on a Japanese set meal built around local Megisu fish soup, with a Western-style option also available.
