Peru's classic route runs from Lima, now one of the world's great food cities, up to Cusco and the Sacred Valley and on to Machu Picchu by train or on the Inca Trail. Altitude is the practical issue: we start you low in the valley before Cusco itself. The lodges in the Sacred Valley have improved enormously, and the hotel at the foot of Machu Picchu lets you enter the site at dawn before the day trains arrive. Ten nights covers it. The Amazon or Lake Titicaca extend the trip for those with two weeks.
