Overview
Amandari stands in the village of Kedewatan, on the edge of Ubud, on a verdant lip of the Ayung River Gorge. The resort was designed after a traditional Balinese village, its layout presided over by a sacred stone tiger. Architect Peter Muller spent two decades trying to draw visitors into Bali's Ubud highlands, away from the coast, before partnering with Aman, then newly arrived with its Asian boutique hotel concept. Amandari opened in 1989. Free-standing guest pavilions and villas are set along winding pathways, and the swimming pool curves in an echo of the rice paddies terraced below. The property sits close to Ubud's artistic centre, within reach of its temples, galleries and markets.
Accommodation is split between pavilions and villas. The pavilions are built with alang-alang thatching and interiors of natural coconut, teak and bamboo, opening onto shaded terraces with outdoor soaking tubs; some include private pools. The villas are Balinese-style homes defined by space and privacy, each connected to the surrounding landscape and each with its own private pool.
Dining draws on Bali's seasonal produce for an Indonesian culinary experience, served at The Restaurant and the Terrace Bar. Wellness at Amandari takes a holistic approach, with a resident spiritual healer and therapies that incorporate local healing ingredients. The resort's signature experience is the Melukat Water Blessing, a dawn purification ceremony held at Tirta Empul Temple and led by a village storyteller. Amandari lies a 90-minute drive from Denpasar's Ngurah Rai International Airport, in the district of Kedewatan. Other Aman properties on Bali are within reach by car: Amankila, on the island's east coast, is around one hour and thirty minutes away, and Aman Villas at Nusa Dua, on the southern peninsula, around two hours.
