Overview

HOSHINOYA Karuizawa sits within the Karuizawa National Wild Bird Sanctuary at the foot of Mount Asama, an hour from Tokyo by train. The resort comprises 77 pavilions, each designed as a living space rather than a simple bedroom, cooled by mountain winds and warmed by geothermal heating. Guests can watch birds and other wildlife from the grounds, and the nearby Picchio ecotourism centre runs programmes focused on the surrounding forest.

Three pavilion types make up the accommodation. Mizunami pavilions sit along the river that runs through the property, with balconies extending over the water and room sizes from 57 to 68 square metres for one to four guests. Yamaroji pavilions range from 44 to 67 square metres for up to three guests: those on the first floor are enclosed by woodland, while second-floor rooms look out over the resort and the bird sanctuary beyond. Niwaroji are secluded villas reached by side paths, 48 to 81 square metres, also for up to three guests. Dining runs across five restaurants and a café and lounge, including an alpine kaiseki menu, a French-inflected dinner called Gibier of Water served at Bleston Court Yukawatan, and Kasuke Beef Shabu-Shabu served in the main dining room.

The hot spring, Hoshino Onsen Tombo-no-yu, draws directly from a source discovered in 1915 and is known locally for its effect on skin. A separate Meditation Bath, open only to resort guests, moves between lit and unlit spaces to encourage quiet. A spa offers oil treatments and meridian acupressure. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out by noon, pets are allowed, and a shuttle runs between Karuizawa Station and the resort.
