Hotel · Matsumoto, Japan
A hot spring ryokan in Asama Onsen, Matsumoto, pairing Italian dinners and regional Shinshu wines with nightly live music and a two-onsen bathing hall.
KAI Matsumoto stands in Asama Onsen, a hot spring district on the edge of Matsumoto, Nagano, in a city that still keeps much of its traditional architecture. The ryokan is a music-themed property: live performances are played at night as a nod to Matsumoto's long-standing music scene, and guests are invited to listen with a glass of wine in hand. The property is undergoing a full renovation and is due to reopen on 4 August 2026.
Dinner is an Italian course built around regional Shinshu wines, including a signature dish served in a piano-inspired vessel, with a Kikyogahara Wine Course offering pairings by the glass from wineries across Nagano Prefecture. Breakfast comes in two forms: a Japanese set with locally sourced chicken and mushrooms steamed on a magnolia leaf with regional miso paste, or a Western version built around an Oden Pot-au-feu that folds classic oden ingredients into a soup-style dish (the Western breakfast is not served from 1 to 3 January). A vegetarian Italian course, free of the eight major allergens, is available on request, and a celebratory box of preserved flowers and cakes can be arranged for birthdays with advance notice. The bath hall includes outdoor baths set against Japanese gardens that change with the seasons, along with dry and wet saunas, across two onsen facilities.
The ryokan has 29 rooms, with occupancy from one to three guests, including KAI Signature Rooms designed around music appreciation, furnished for guests to put on a record and settle in. Nearby attractions named by the property include Matsumoto Castle, Nakamachi Street, Zenkō-ji Temple, the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and the mountain resort of Kamikōchi. The property is about fifteen minutes by car from Matsumoto Station. Check-in is from 2:30pm and check-out by 11:00am, Wi-Fi is free throughout, private parking is available without reservation, and EV charging is offered around the clock. Pets are not permitted, and children up to six may share a bed depending on room capacity; separate children's menus are offered for guests aged six and under and seven to eleven.
