Hotel Bel-Air
A twelve-acre garden estate a mile west of Beverly Hills, opened in 1946 and renovated in 2008 with designer Alexandra Champalimaud and the Rockwell Group.
Overview
Alphonzo Bell, an oil entrepreneur, bought 600 acres of land west of Los Angeles and named the area Bel-Air. In 1946 the Texan hotelier Joseph Drown purchased 18 acres of that land, including Bell's original estate planning office, and worked with architect Burton Schutt to open Hotel Bel-Air on 24 August 1946. A restoration in the 1970s, led by architect Manuel S. Alavarez, brought the colours of the gardens into the rooms. The hotel joined Dorchester Collection in 2008, followed by a two-year renovation of all 103 guest rooms and public spaces with designer Alexandra Champalimaud and the Rockwell Group.
The hotel occupies twelve acres of gardens, home to 483 specimen trees and more than 4,000 plants, with paths that wind past Swan Lake to guest room doors. Most rooms and suites open directly onto these gardens rather than onto internal corridors. Room categories range from the 40 square metre Superior Room to the two-bedroom Chalon Suite at 124 square metres, with several suites offering a private patio, fireplace or plunge pool. The Restaurant at Hotel Bel-Air serves modern Californian cuisine with a Mediterranean influence, including a tortilla soup that has been on the menu since 1980. The Bar & Lounge, The Living Room and The Pâtisserie, overseen by executive pastry chef Christophe Rull, complete the food and drink offer, alongside a private dining room seating up to 18.
The Spa at Hotel Bel-Air works with Valmont and has seven treatment rooms, a private enclave, a nail suite, steam rooms and a salon by Joseph Hair & Beauty, along with 24-hour access to the fitness studio for guests and spa members. The pool, open daily from 8am to 6pm, is reserved for hotel guests, with children under 16 required to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The hotel stands a mile west of Beverly Hills and half a mile from Sunset Boulevard, a ten-minute drive from Rodeo Drive and Century City, and around 30 to 40 minutes from both the airport and the beach.
