Hotel Esencia occupies a 50-acre estate on Xpu-Ha bay, on the stretch of coast between Tulum and Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The property began as the private home of an Italian duchess before its conversion to a hotel, and a new owner took over in 2014, guiding a reimagining that kept the original Main House as the estate's centre. Footpaths lead from the house to the property's 47 suites and 4 villas, set among jungle and along the shoreline of a bay where sea turtles nest each year.
Accommodation ranges from Jungle Suites set back among the trees to Master Beach Suites and Master Ocean Suites facing the Caribbean, with Rooftop Wellness Suites offering private fitness studios and rooftop terraces, and plunge pool options among the Jungle Suites. Villas include the two-bedroom Pool Villa, the colonial-style Yum Ha Villa next door to the hotel, the Presidential Bungalow with its own stretch of beach and palapa, and the Esencia Mansion, one of the larger private villas on this part of the coast.
Dining is split across three restaurants: Taiyo, a poolside Japanese kitchen with an Omakasé bar; Beefbar, an outpost of the Monaco meat restaurant set in the Palm Garden; and Mistura, a beachfront restaurant built under a large palapa serving Mexican dishes with a Mediterranean inflection. A Coffee Bar & Juice Bar and a two-storey Beach Bar round out the food and drink. Esencia Spa, at the east end of the gardens, is built under palapa roofs and organised around Mayan geometry, with steam rooms, an infrared sauna, an ice chamber, a cold plunge pool, a Temazcal sweat lodge and NuEra Tight radiofrequency treatments. Guests also have access to a Technogym fitness room, a tennis and pickleball court, and a private helipad used for helicopter transfers and tours across the Yucatán peninsula.
