Overview
Huka Lodge sits within seventeen acres of established, parkland gardens on the banks of the Waikato River, close to Lake Taupō on New Zealand's North Island. The property began in 1924 as a fisherman's camp, with white canvas tents pitched along a stretch of river prized for its trout. A century later, the lodge remains among New Zealand's oldest hospitality properties, its lawns still running down to the water's edge.
Accommodation comprises twenty guest suites and two private residences, the Alan Pye Cottage and the Alex van Heeren Cottage. The suites open onto lawns and gardens, with the river never far from view. The Alan Pye Cottage is a two-bedroom residence of 325 square metres with its own infinity pool and heated spa. The Alex van Heeren Cottage extends to 364 square metres, with four king bedrooms, four ensuite bathrooms, a fully-equipped kitchen and a terrace with a plunge pool and spa, its site chosen for a sightline downstream to Huka Falls. Huka Lodge welcomes children aged ten and over.
Dining draws on a wine cellar and a menu that changes daily, built around New Zealand produce. Meals are served in the restaurant, bar, lounges and terrace, with additional dining nooks set around the gardens. The Huka Spa, located within the lodge's Wellness Grounds, offers treatments for guests, while the river frontage supports fly fishing, lake cruising and heli experiences.
