Overview

KAI Kirishima sits on the slopes above Kirishima Onsen in Kagoshima Prefecture, with Sakurajima visible from every one of its 49 rooms. All rooms are Signature Rooms, finished with local papercraft and woven fabric crafts rather than a single uniform design. Guests stay between one and four to a room, and the ryokan allows pets. A short monorail ride takes guests to a separate bathhouse set in a field of silvergrass, and at night staff perform a dance depicting Japan's origin myth, set in the nearby Kirishima Mountains and accompanied by taiko drums and kagura suzu bells.

Dinner is kaiseki, built around seasonal seafood and produce grown in the region's white soil highlands, served in semi-private rooms suited to couples or extended families across two seatings. A seasonal local dish features Kurobuta pork, a Kagoshima specialty, prepared shabu-shabu style with bonito flakes. Breakfast centres on Satsuma-jiru, a Kagoshima dish, with a Western-style alternative available except from 1 to 3 January. Children aged four to eleven have their own menus, and vegetarian kaiseki and breakfast are available on request, prepared free of the eight major allergens. Shochu pairings are offered with the kaiseki menu, drawing on Kagoshima Prefecture's shochu breweries.

On site there is a restaurant, a café and lounge, a spa and massage facility, an onsen, a public bath, a playroom and a pool. Private parking is free and unreserved, and EV charging is available around the clock across four 200V units. Nearby attractions include Sakurajima, the Sengan-en garden once owned by a feudal lord, Takachiho Farm, Kirishima Jingu shrine, and Mount Takachiho-no-Mine, linked to Japan's foundation myth. Check-in is at 2:30 PM and check-out at 11:00 AM, a schedule that takes effect from 1 April 2026.
