Overview
Zuri Zanzibar sits on Kendwa Beach, on the north-west shore of Unguja, about 50 kilometres from Stone Town and its international airport. The resort covers twelve hectares of tropical garden and holds 56 bungalows, suites and villas, each built as a separate structure with its own outdoor shower and private terrace. Villas add a private stretch of beach and a jacuzzi in an oceanfront setting, while suites come with a double-sized terrace and a private outdoor jacuzzi of their own.
Food runs across three restaurants and four bars, with a menu that mixes European, African, Arabic and Indian cooking. Wellbeing options include yoga, meditation, a wellness programme, a spice garden that covers a quarter of the property, and a gym area described on site as 'wild fitness'. Water sports are handled through the Wimbi Water Sports Center, and children aged four to twelve have a dedicated activity programme, with babysitting available separately.
The property was designed by architects Jestico+Whiles as a member of Design Hotels, using local materials and building forms drawn from Zanzibari heritage. It holds an EarthCheck Sustainable Design Gold Certification, stated to be the first hotel to receive this particular award, and runs its own wells, desalination plant and water treatment system on site. Guest amenities are sourced from Mwani Zanzibar, decorative pieces from Chako, and a community programme called Zuri Giving has operated in the village of Kendwa since 2015.
