West Lake, tea terraces and canal towns an hour from Shanghai by train.
Our notes
Hangzhou's West Lake has been the subject of Chinese painting for a thousand years and the city remains the most attractive in eastern China, with the Longjing tea terraces in the hills behind it. Nanjing, the former capital, has the Ming tombs and the city wall. Both are under two hours from Shanghai by high speed train, which makes them a civilised addition rather than a separate trip. The canal towns at Wuzhen and Xitang are the other reason to come. Spring and autumn are the seasons.
