Hotel · Mallorca, Spain
A fortress built to guard the Bay of Palma, restored into a hotel within a 30-hectare nature reserve near Cala Blava, Mallorca, with five room categories, two restaurants and an underground spa.
Overview
Cap Rocat occupies a fortress built for the surveillance of the Bay of Palma, on the Cala Blava coast of Mallorca. The building is a Heritage Asset and listed as a National Monument, and its restoration by architect Antonio Obrador won the Europa Nostra Award. The fortress sits within a Protected Natural Area, a 30-hectare nature reserve bordered by two kilometres of protected marine coastline. A photo collection by Vignetti and Obrador is kept at the property's own museum.
Five room categories occupy what were once courtyards, streets, watchtowers and battlements cut into the rock. The Double Fortaleza rooms sit behind the fortress's main gate and defensive moat, with vaulted ceilings, locally sourced stone floors, extra-large beds and a bathroom with separate bath and shower. The Sentinels rooms are carved from former defensive positions where cannon were once hidden, with marble floors, rough-hewn stone walls, two bathrooms and a small private pool on a cliff-edge terrace. The Suite Cap Rocat occupies former gun embrasures, with king-size beds, some canopied, and private terraces spread across three levels. Suite El Cabo and Suite del Mar complete the range, the latter set in a former caretaker's house at the edge of the sea.
Food is served at two restaurants. La Fortaleza seats thirty diners under chef Víctor García, moves to the fortress roof in summer, and has held two Suns in the Repsol Guide since 2019. It was named a favourite by Condé Nast Traveller in 2018 and won the Balearic Islands Food Critics Award for Best Hotel Cuisine in 2012. The Sea Club serves simpler dishes from a traditional Majorcan wood-fired oven. The spa is built twelve metres below ground in the most sheltered part of the fortress, with a saltwater swimming pool, natural light and a hammam drawing on Turkish traditions of water and body wellness. The hotel also arranges boat tours and other experiences built around the sea, the island's history and its traditions.
