Overview

Duba Plains Camp occupies the private Duba Concession in the heart of the Okavango Delta, a matrix of palm-dotted islands, flood plains and woodland. It has been the home of Great Plains Conservation co-founders Dereck and Beverly Joubert for nearly twenty years, and the area has featured in several of their wildlife films. The camp is known for its swamp lions, which swim across water channels to hunt lechwe and buffalo, and for regular visits from painted dogs and leopards throughout the year.

The main area holds a central dining room, a lounge, an interactive kitchen, a wine cellar and a library, with an extended raised deck under ebony trees used for outdoor dining. Five bespoke, private suites stand on raised, recycled railway sleeper decking, built in a style the camp describes as 1920s-inspired African safari design. Each suite has an indoor lounge, en-suite facilities with a flush loo, double vanities, indoor and outdoor showers and a bath, ceiling fans and an air-conditioning system over the bed. A private veranda holds a plunge pool and a shaded sala overlooking the floodplain. Guests have complimentary use of a professional camera with a selection of lenses and binoculars, and images taken during the stay are downloaded as a gift at departure.

Activities include open-vehicle safari drives, guided bush walks, mokoro canoe trips and boating, water levels permitting, with sightings that include leopards, elephants and hippos, and more than 200 recorded bird species. Dereck Joubert made a piece of art for the camp from a deconstructed brass clock, inspired by a male lion Beverly photographed there, marking the roughly 20,000 lions thought to remain in Africa. The camp is a Relais & Châteaux member and the source material suggests pairing a stay here with Selinda, for its elephant herds, as part of a longer Botswana safari.
