Hotel · Zermatt, Switzerland
The Grand Hotel Zermatterhof stands in the centre of car-free Zermatt, with views of the Matterhorn, and has welcomed guests since 1879.
The Grand Hotel Zermatterhof sits in the middle of Zermatt, a village reached only by rail or electric vehicle after visitors leave their cars in Täsch. The hotel is a ten-minute walk from Zermatt station, and the property can arrange collection by electric bus or by horse-drawn carriage pulled by its own Lipizzan horses, available between 1pm and 5pm with advance booking. The hotel traces its origins to 1876-1879, when the families of Zermatt built it as a community project rather than take on debt individually, with every burgher contributing to construction. It was first leased by Alexander Seiler, and from 1920 the Burgergemeinde, the burgher council, has run it directly.
Over the decades the hotel has hosted guests from politics, industry, art and showbusiness, including Walt Disney, and it prepares a traditional reception with local wine for the Zermatt community each year on Corpus Christi day. Zermatt itself grew from a remote farming village into a mountaineering destination after the first Matterhorn ascent in 1865, and the hotel welcomed its first winter season from 1927. Food and drink on site runs across several venues: Alpine Gourmet Prato Borni, Lusi Brasserie & Lounge, Saycheese!, the How do You do? Bar Lounge Cafe, the Smokers Lounge and the Stars Bar, along with room service.
Rooms are presented in categories including Classic Rooms, a Deluxe Double Room category and Luxury Suites, with further detail held on the hotel's own Sleep pages. A spa and an events function are also listed among the hotel's facilities.
