Hotel · Kinugawa, Japan
A 48-room hot spring ryokan on a hilltop above the Kinugawa River in Tochigi, a fifteen-minute walk from Kinugawa Onsen Station.
KAI Kinugawa stands on a high hilltop above the Kinugawa River in Tochigi prefecture, a fifteen-minute walk from Kinugawa Onsen Station. The ryokan is built around a wide courtyard that changes colour through the seasons, and its interiors draw on regional crafts, including Mashiko ceramics, indigo dyeing and Kanuma Kumiko woodwork.
The hot spring baths are divided between a glass-lined indoor hall and an outdoor bath, both positioned to take in the surrounding colour through the year. The 48 guest rooms, including the KAI Signature Rooms, use the same local materials found throughout the property, with contemporary takes on ceramic, indigo-dyed textile and stoneware detailing built into daily use rather than kept for display. Rooms take between one and three guests.
Dinner centres on U-Kamo Nabe, a hot pot built from two distinct broths that brings together grilled eel and duck meat in a single pot, served across a kaiseki menu presented in Mashiko ware bowls. Breakfast follows a Japanese set built around Tochigi ingredients, with a Western alternative available outside the New Year period. Guests can take a Mashiko ceramics masterclass, eating from the wares made during the session and choosing a small plate to take home. Nearby, Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji, Nikko Toshogu and the Kinugawa River cruise make for straightforward day trips.
