Overview

KAI Sengokuhara sits in Sengokuhara, part of Hakone in Kanagawa prefecture, about fifteen minutes by car from Gora Station. It is a hot spring ryokan with sixteen rooms, each built for one to three guests, and each fitted with a private outdoor bath on its terrace. The baths draw on milky-white volcanic hot spring water, which feeds both a hot bath and a cooler, lukewarm one. After dark, a water garden beside the outdoor bath is lit with glow stones. Rooms are hung with work made by artists who have themselves stayed at the ryokan, part of a standing arrangement the hotel calls its KAI Signature Rooms.

Evenings include a workshop where guests decorate a tenugui, a traditional Japanese handkerchief, painting their own design onto the cloth. Dinner is a kaiseki menu built around local produce and imagery, including a smoke dish meant to evoke Owakudani, the volcanic valley nearby, served on dishware chosen to match. Meals are taken in semi-private dining rooms screened with lattice work. Breakfast centres on a thick slice of soft-grilled Japanese yam, a local root vegetable, with a Western-style alternative available except from 1 to 3 January. Vegetarian kaiseki dinners and breakfasts are offered, free of the eight major food allergens, and there are separate children's menus for guests aged four to six and seven to eleven.

The ryokan is smoke-free, with a designated smoking area, and has a restaurant, café and lounge, a spa and massage service, a playroom, a pool, an onsen, a public bath and a meeting room. Pets are allowed, Wi-Fi is free throughout, and private parking and EV charging are provided without reservation. Nearby attractions include Hakone Shrine, the Owakudani volcanic valley, Mount Fuji, the Hakone Open-Air Museum, the Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands and the Sengokuhara pampas grass field. Bookings are currently accepted only from within Japan.
