Overview
NIHI Sumba occupies Hoba Wawi in Wanokaka, on the south coast of West Sumba Regency, roughly an hour's flight from Bali. The resort's 31 villas and estates run along a two and a half kilometre stretch of Nihiwatu Beach, each built to a different plan: hilltop suites with wide ocean views, beachfront cottages with direct sand access, and multi-bedroom estates such as Raja Mandaka and Marangga Family Estate for larger groups. Several villas, among them Kasambi and Lulu Amahu Saudara, come with their own private pool set within the grounds.
Days on site can be built around the surf break Occy's Left, which runs directly in front of the resort, or around the Riding & Racquet Club, where tennis courts sit alongside the resort's Sandalwood ponies. Nihioka Spa is positioned above a secluded cove and anchors what the resort calls its Wild Wellness programme, spanning treatments, equine wellness sessions, mindfulness, the Sumba 7 programme, and the multi-day Spa Safari. Guests eat across four named venues: Ombak Restaurant, Kaboku Restaurant, the Nio Beach Club, and the Boathouse Bar. Fitness options include a gym, padel, pickleball, and yoga.
The resort was founded by Chris Burch and James McBride. Staff are drawn largely from villages across Sumba, and the property supports the Sumba Foundation alongside other local philanthropic programmes, including English Goes to Kampung and the Sumba Horse Project. A collection of private residences, described by the resort as a limited number of estates within the property, is also part of its plans.
