Private island · Mahe, Seychelles
North Island is a 201-hectare private island in the Seychelles' inner granitic group, with eleven villas and a conservation programme protecting turtles, tortoises and the Seychelles White-Eye.
North Island sits among the inner granitic islands of the Seychelles, administratively part of Mahé district, though reached and experienced as a destination apart. The island covers 201 hectares of forest, granite peaks and two main beaches, East and West. Eleven villas stand along East Beach, built from reclaimed Takamaka wood, sustainably sourced Rosewood and ylang-ylang. Ten Beachfront Villas each cover 450 square metres and sleep up to four guests, with a private plunge pool, three outdoor showers, an open bathroom with a sunken bathtub, and a separate study that can be reconfigured for families. Villa North, the largest, covers 750 square metres beside the granite slope of Grand Paloss peak, with four outdoor showers, a private plunge pool, a secluded sala and a firepit. Guests may also take all eleven villas and the island's full amenities for their sole use.
Meals are served at the Piazza on East Beach, where the menu draws on Creole cooking with a European inflection, and at the Sunset Bar on West Beach, which serves stone-baked pizza from a wood-fired oven alongside a cocktail list. Destination dining can be arranged elsewhere on the island: a picnic on Honeymoon Beach, champagne and canapés by a bonfire at the Cross on Spa Hill, a sunset dinner by the pool, or a meal served in the villa. La Vie Spa, on Spa Hill overlooking the Indian Ocean, uses natural, locally sourced ingredients in its treatments. Activities are organised across land, water and under water, and a children's programme runs for families. Weddings, including legal ceremonies, can be arranged with the island's Guest Relations team.
The island's conservation work is organised under the Noah's Ark Programme, covering reforestation of native trees, reintroduction of endangered birds, and repopulation of sea turtles and tortoises. North Island records the highest density of nesting Green Turtles among the inner islands of Seychelles, with monitoring in place since 1998. More than 130 Aldabra tortoises live on the island, including Brutus, believed to be at least 200 years old and weighing around 200kg. Twenty-five Seychelles White-Eyes, a critically endangered species, were relocated here in 2007; the population now exceeds 100. The island's history runs from an 18th-century shipwreck through a 19th-century spice and copra plantation under the Beaufond family to its sale in 1976 and purchase by new owners in 1997, who began the restoration that continues today.
