Overview

Okavango Explorers Camp sits in the southwest of the private Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana, at the point where the Selinda Spillway touches the Okavango Delta. Dereck and Beverly Joubert set up the first camp here among leadwood trees, and spent months paddling and walking the surrounding waterways before it became a permanent base. The site draws on two ecosystems at once, the permanent upper Delta water system and the Selinda Reserve, an area known for its density of predators and elephants.

The camp is built around a 1920s travel mood: campaign-style furniture, canvas tents on slightly raised decking, and a general sense of the old hinterland expedition rather than a fixed lodge. Tent décor, the safari vehicles and the solar energy plant have recently been refreshed. The layout and style suit families or groups of friends who want to take over the whole camp for an extended stay, and it is commonly paired with the other Explorer-Collection camps, Selinda Explorers Camp and Duba Explorers Camp.

Wildlife viewing covers game drives in open vehicles, canoeing where water levels allow, guided walking, and seasonal tag-and-release fishing. Lions, leopards and wild dogs are seen regularly, along with giraffe, buffalo and less common antelope such as roan, sable and eland, the last of which is not found at the other Selinda Reserve camps. In late September, at the height of the dry season, more than 9,000 elephants concentrate along this river system. Birdwatchers can expect a long list of species along the spillway and Delta channels.
