Overview

Qualia sits on the northern tip of Hamilton Island, part of the Whitsunday group within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Opened in 2007 and designed by Australian architect Chris Beckingham, the resort was built around the idea of qualia, a Latin word the property translates as 'a collection of deeper sensory experiences'. The design blurs the line between indoors and out, with timber and glass structures set among native bushland.

Guests choose between Windward, Seaward and Leeward Pavilions, each with a different aspect over the Coral Sea or Whitsundays. Windward and Seaward Pavilions include private infinity-edge plunge pools; Leeward Pavilions face south-west across bushland toward the water. For longer stays or larger groups, the self-catering Sunset Pavilion sits beside the resort's private helipad, while the Beach House and The Residence offer separate guest accommodation, entertaining decks and pools up to 25 metres in length.

Dining is split between Long Pavilion, set among Eucalyptus trees, and Pebble Beach, on the water's edge; both are recognised by the Australian Good Food Guide. Executive chef Joshua Hingston, previously of Bennelong and the Park Hyatt Sydney, sources Queensland produce for both kitchens. Spa qualia uses the Australian ranges Sodashi, LaGaia Unedited and People4Ocean, and is reserved for resort guests. Activities include helicopter flights to Heart Reef, sailing to Whitehaven Beach, snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef and golf at the Hamilton Island Golf Club on neighbouring Dent Island.

Is transport included between the airport and qualia?
Yes. Guests are met at Hamilton Island Airport or Marina by VIP transfer, and each stay includes use of an electric golf buggy for getting around the island.
