Camp · , Botswana
A three-suite camp on the Selinda Spillway in Botswana's private Selinda Reserve, shaped around an elephant-inspired design.
Selinda Camp stands on the banks of the Selinda Spillway where it enters the Linyanti River, inside the private Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana. Dereck Joubert designed the camp around five elements, Earth, Wind, Water, Fire and Metal, moulding the structure around the surrounding trees rather than clearing them. Two life-sized elephant skull sculptures mark the entrance to the main area, an early sign of the elephant theme that runs through the camp's art and architecture, some of it drawing on the work of Joubert's late brother, Keith Joubert.
The camp holds three suites, each with its own open-air verandah and swimming pool. Bathrooms are fitted with brass baths, double vanity basins, a flush loo and indoor showers, and each bedroom has a writing desk, a tea and coffee station and wardrobe space, with air conditioning and heating over the bed. Beverly Joubert's fine art photography hangs in every suite, and guests have free use of a professional camera, a set of lenses and binoculars for the stay, with their own wildlife images downloaded as a gift at departure. A spa sits in the main area, and treatments can also be taken in the privacy of a suite.
The private Selinda Reserve carries large elephant herds, the Selinda pack of African wild dogs and the Selinda lion pride, the subject of the National Geographic film Birth of a Pride by Dereck and Beverly Joubert. Activities include open-vehicle game drives, guided walks and boating on the permanent waterways, along with seasonal tag-and-release fishing when water levels allow. Birdwatchers can look for more than two hundred recorded species. Selinda Camp is a member of Relais & Châteaux.
