Overview

Ebony Lodge opened in 1993 as Singita's first property, on the banks of the Sand River in South Africa's Sabi Sand. The reserve traces back to a 30,000-acre tract of land bought by the grandfather of Singita founder Luke Bailes, later folded into the wider Sabi Sand Nature Reserve. Guests here have access to 45,000 acres of private wildlife land, known for high concentrations of big game and frequent leopard sightings.

The main lodge has been opened up over time to increase its connection to the river and surrounding bush. Its original Adobe-style architecture, drawn from West and North African building traditions, now sits alongside canvas and timber additions, letting in more natural light. Suspended wooden walkways and shaded decks run along the water's edge. Each suite has its own plunge pool with a view over the Sand River, and there is a separate main pool set among rocky outcrops and trees, with canvas chairs positioned in the shade for reading between game drives.

Days at Ebony are built around game drives and guided walks, with wine tasting, a fitness centre, yoga and wellness treatments, stargazing and a boutique and gallery also on offer. The lodge caters for families and runs an anti-poaching canine unit as part of its wider conservation work. This work is carried out with the Singita Lowveld Trust, the non-profit partner responsible for biodiversity and community programmes across Singita's South African properties, protecting species such as rhino, leopard, lion, wild dog and vulture.
