Overview

Sitatunga Private Island Suite sits on a private island in Botswana's Okavango Delta, next to the main Sitatunga Private Island camp, which is within walking distance. The two-bedroom suite looks over a lagoon where sitatunga antelope, an aquatic species rarely seen elsewhere, move through the surrounding reeds. Boat is the main way to explore the area, with guided walks across the island also on offer.

The suite is built high among ebony trees, a design that follows local tradition for safety and for the view it affords. Its architecture takes a deserted island theme: thick thatch roofs, canvas walls, and pole woodwork inspired by the masts of a salvaged shipwreck. Giant basket forms reference the fishing traditions of the Bayei people. Inside, vintage Persian carpets, blue trade bead curtains and flowing silk and linen drapery pick up the blue of the lagoon. A central lounge and dining area is flanked by two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom holding a ball and claw bath, an indoor shower, a flush toilet and a double vanity. A deck leads from the lounge to a private pool and outdoor seating.

Activities centre on the water: a private motorised boat, a poled mokoro when levels allow, and guided walks on foot. Tag-and-release fishing runs from March to December. Guests have the use of a complimentary professional camera and lens set, plus binoculars, throughout their stay, and treatments can be taken in the suite or on the open-air deck. The suite forms part of the Great Plains Conservation Réserve-Collection and is Botswana's newest member of Relais & Châteaux.
